Today, men in New Jersey at risk for, or diagnosed with, prostate cancer can obtain world class prevention, research and treatment…without having to leave the state. The Dean and Betty Gallo Prostate Cancer Center is the state's only specialized prostate health resource at a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center, the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. This coveted designation means that New Jersey's men benefit from the insight and experience of our nation's most talented and sought-after physicians and scientists. And, it uniquely positions The Dean and Betty Gallo Prostate Cancer Center to make historic advancements in the prevention, research and treatment of prostate cancer.
To reach that goal, we have created a prostate cancer research and treatment center of extraordinary quality. It is a place where research discoveries are applied to prevention and treatment, and where compassionate care is given to patients, their families, and friends. The Dean and Betty Gallo Prostate Cancer Center is named for Congressman Dean A. Gallo, a respected and beloved man who served the people of New Jersey at the local, state, and federal levels, and who lost his life to prostate cancer in 1994 at the age of 58. Congressman Gallo's wife, Betty, worked to establish the Center so that other men, and the families who love them, can live longer, healthier lives. "My goal is to help prevent others from suffering the way Dean did, by advocating the importance of early detection, awareness, and education," Betty declares. Established in 1990, the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) delivers advanced comprehensive care, conducts world class cancer research, transforms laboratory discoveries into clinical practice, and provides education regarding cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. A network of partner and affiliate hospitals across the state helps deliver quality cancer care close to home.
