A
tribute to fatherhood in memory of one of
its greatest advocates.
The Men’s Health Network has long recognized
that improving men’s health helps both
fathers and families. In honor of Jim Young,
an MHN Director whose vision helped make
this a key part of MHN’s mission, we are
proud to present the Jim Young Fathers’
Health Fund, a unique matching grant.
A Passion for Helping Families . . . .
In his professional life, Jim was widely
known for his brilliant legal mind. A
graduate of the University of Michigan Law
School who went on to become the General
Counsel of Bell Atlantic, his legal and
professional accomplishments were truly
remarkable. But those who knew him best knew
that Jim’s most admirable trait was his
great humanity and compassion for others. As
the father of three children, Jim’s love for
his own family extended into a desire to
help and protect all children and families
from the heartache of losing a father.
A Dedication to Making a Difference . . . .
Jim focused his attention on the tragedy of
premature death and disability.
Understanding the devastating effect that
early death and disability of a father can
have on children
and their families, Jim worked tirelessly to
improve the lives and health of men
everywhere. With his help and inspiration,
the Men’s Health Network created a number of
programs to help children and fathers, from
health screenings and fatherhood initiatives
to the Boys and Schools program. Together,
Jim and MHN were able to make a difference
in the lives of thousands of men
and their families.
A Mission Cut Short . . . .
When Jim passed away unexpectedly on July 4,
2007, it was not only a terrible loss for
his family and friends, but also for all of
those who care deeply about improving the
lives of men and their families. It is a
terrible tragedy that Jim, whose greatest
passion was working to ensure that children
were not left without their fathers, was
forced to leave behind his own family far
too soon. The world is an emptier place for
his loss.
A Family’s Tribute . . . .
But Jim’s influence as a father and as an
advocate for fathers will be his enduring
legacy. In honor of Jim’s commitment to
children, families, and fathers, Jim’s
family wishes to remember him by carrying on
his mission. Thus, with the help of an
anonymous donor, the Jim Young Fathers’
Health Fund was founded in Jim’s memory.
Because it is a matching grant program, when
you make a donation to the Jim Young
Fathers’ Health Fund, a matching donation
will also be added to the fund. In this way,
we can all continue Jim’s work and help to
ensure that fewer families will know what it
means to lose a father.
