1. Circumcisions Performed in U.S. Community Hospitals, 2005: AHRQ

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Statistical Brief #45 January 2008. Circumcision is performed less often for medical purposes than for cultural, religious, or cosmetic reasons. In 2005, about 56 percent of male newborns were circumcised prior to release from the hospital. Approximately 60 percent were billed to private insurers. Medicaid was billed for about one-third of circumcisions.
