Sample Letter to Your Congressman (or Senator) in Support of the Stamp Out Prostate Cancer Research Act (see some additional talking points below):

(month) (day), (year)

The Honorable (first name) (last name)
U.S. House of Representatives (or U.S. Senate),
Washington, DC.

Dear Representative (or Senator) (last name),

I am writing in support of H.R. 2562, the Stamp Out Prostate Cancer Stamp Act of 1999.  This legislation will create a Prostate Cancer Research Stamp similar to the very successful Breast Cancer Research Stamp passed by Congress in 1997.  The Breast Cancer Research Stamp raised over $8 million for research in the first year it was on sale.

Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed non-skin cancer in America, affecting about 200,000 men in 1999.  Approximately 32,000 men will lose their lives to the disease this year.  A man has a one in six chance of getting prostate cancer in his lifetime. If he has a close relative with prostate cancer, his risk doubles.  African-American men have the highest prostate cancer incidence rate in the world and their mortality rate from the disease is more than twice that of the rate for Caucasian Americans.

With the right investment in public education and research, prostate cancer is preventable, controllable and curable.  The creation of a prostate cancer research stamp not only will raise the public's awareness of the risk and prevalence of this deadly disease but also it is an innovative way by which Americans can freely aid scientific research.

Thank you for creating this opportunity for concerned Americans to support the fight against prostate cancer. If there is anything I can do in the future to assist in the passage of this bill, please do not hesitate to let me know.

H.R. 2562 will allow citizens such as myself to support prostate cancer research with the simple act of purchasing stamps at our local post office.  Please cosponsor and vote for this critical legislation so that all Americans can join in the fight against prostate cancer by purchasing the prostate cancer research stamp.

Very truly yours,

(your name)

  1. Suggestions for formatting your letter in the text box: type your letter out in a word processor like Wordpad or Notepad first.  Do not use any line breaks (carriage returns) in the paragraphs of your letter, allowing the words in each paragraph to "line-wrap" from line to line.  Then select and copy the entire text of your letter from your word processing program to the "text of your letter" window above.  Following these guidelines will allow for proper formatting of your email letter.
