Perry Karfunkel, MD, PhD

Men's Health Network - Board of Advisors

Specialty: Primary care Internist

Topics: Men's Health; Health Education Needs

Dr. Karfunkel is a Primary Care Internist in practice at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. Eighty five percent of his primary care patients are men. One of the things that interests him the most is that in seeing male patients the same healthcare issues come up over and over again, thus leading to a realization that most men know very little about their own health care needs and health care risks. This experience also brings up the “big picture issue” that in order for men to move forward in trying to satisfy their healthcare needs they often need a “buddy” or “mentor” more than they need a doctor. Dr. Karfunkel is particularly interested in creating medically-supervised programs of exercise for men who meet the criteria of Metabolic Syndrome and who thus need regular exercise to reduce their risk of early heart attacks and diabetes.

Dr. Karfunkel has published an assessment of the extent of Vitamin D deficiency in men in his practice, documenting that most men outside of Boston have vitamin D deficiency and that this is particularly prevalent among subpopulations within his practice who were born in either India or China.
